News up to December 2015

Discussant at the conference on “Competition, Standardization, and Innovation” organized by the The Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC), 10-11 December 2015. On this event, I was part of the same plenary session as Nobel price winner Jean Tirole.

Dec 2015: Printed version out of a new paper on Just-In-Time inventions at Research Policy, co-authored by Byeongwoo Kang.

Nov 2015: New paper co-authored with Negin Salimi and Koen Frenken in Science and Public Policy (see in publications). 

Nov. 2015: Presented paper at the 2015 Conference on IP Statistics for Decision Makers (IPSDM), to be held in Vienna, on 3-4 November 2015.

Oct. 2015: Served as invited speaker and session organizer at a 2-day international seminar organized by the  China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) on Antitrust Law and Intellectual Property Rights, which will take place in Beijing on October 22-23. 

Oct. 2015: presented paper at the IEEE 9th International Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology (IEEE SIIT 2015), 6 - 8 October 2015, Sunnyvale, California.

September 2015: Presented a paper at the European Policy for IP (EPIP 2015) conference in Glasgow, 2-3 September 2015.

April 2015: a paper titled “Does working with industry come at a price? A study of doctoral candidates” with Negin Salimi and Koen Frenken was published on-line in Technovation. See in Publications.

In the second half of May 2015 I will teach at the EuroTech doctoral course “Economics of Innovation and Technological Change” in Lausanne, Swiss.

On 5 May 2015 I will deliver an invited talk at the European Patent Office / Bocconi University workshop on IP management case studies.

At the Net Futures 2015 conference, March 25-26 2015, Kai Jakobs and I provided a key note presentation on the relation between research and standardization in the session ‘Radio Access and Spectrum - FP7 Future Networks Cluster’).  

On March 13, 2015 I delivered a talk at the Dutch ETSI member organisation NELO at the Ministry of Economic Affairs in The Hague.

On March 25, 2015 I participated as a special advisor to the IEEE Board Meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

On November 6th, 2014 I delivered an invited talk at the Advisory council for science, technology and innovation (AWTI, formerly known as AWT) on collaboration between universities and industry.

On July 7, 2014, ITU released a handbook on standards and patents which I co-authored with Antoine Dore and several ITU staff members. See in Publications

On July 1, 2014, I was appointed as the chair of the Chair of the Technology, Innovation and Society (TIS) group.

Two new studies appeared that we conducted for the Autoriteit Consument en Markt (ACM) - see Reports.

On June 19, I organized a seminar together with the Product Development & Management Association - Netherlands (PDMA.NL) titled “IP & Open Innovatie: Paradox of Synergie?”

June 2014: gave a presentation at JETRO, the research arm of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Formerly this was known as MITI, one of the most powerful agencies of the Japanese government.

April 2014: Leaving for a two month sabbatical at the Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan, and several meetings at other place.

April 2014: Two papers accepted at the Schumpeter 15th ISS Conference 2014 in Jena, June 2014. 

March 2014 : Report on Patents and Standards commissioned by the EC is now published. See more information at Publications section of this site.

Feb 2014: Promoted to Associate Professor at the TU/e.

Jan 2014: My Ph.D. student Byeongwoo Kang successfully defended his thesis at the Tokyo University.

Jan 2014: Invited to contribute to the work of the EC Expert Group on Patent Aggregation.

Dec 2013: Invited talk at the LUISS Università Guido Carli in Rome.

Nov 2013: Invited talk at “Kenniswerkplaats: de wetenschap achter valorisatie” on 26 november in Utrecht, organised by Instituut Maatschappelijke Innovatie (IMI).

Oct 2013: the report of the NAS committee on patents and standards, of which I was a member, is released. See also information on the commissioned report Andy Updegrove and I prepared for this  committee.

June 2013: Doing an keynote speech for the United Nations / ITU Global Symposium for Regulators 2013 in  Warsaw.

May 2013: A new paper on patent pools, written with Simon den Uijl of Philips and Henk de Vries of Erasmus university, is accepted for publication by California Management Review.

In the summer of 2013, I will present papers at a series of conferences, including ZEW/MaCCI INNOPAT, EMAEE, DRUID, EURAS, and AoM.

In July 2013, I will deliver an invited speech at the ITU Global Symposium for Regulators 2013.

In June 2013, I will deliver an invited speech at the IEEE-SA Patent Forumin Brussels.

In May 2013, I accompanied a group of 28 students on an intensive study trip to South Korea, visiting several universities, research institutes and companies every day.

In January 2013 I started work on a commissioned study by the EC on patents in standards

In 2013, I will deliver an invited talk at the ITU Global Symposium for Regulators 2013, July 3-5.

In October 2012, the International Telecommunications Union organizes a Patent Roundtable at which I will deliver a keynote speech.

In early October 2012, the committee of the National Academies of Science in which I participate will organize a public workshop, where a number of commissioned studies will be presented.

April 2012: On April 11-12, I will deliver an invited talk at the Fourth International Workshop on Evolution of Technology and Standards at the Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo.

April 2012: Papers accepted at both the Schumpeter Society conference (Brisbane, Australia) and at DRUID (Copenhagen).

Jan 2012: Recently, I was appointed as a committee member at the National Academies of Science in the US, where we will investigate the impact of patents in standards.

December 2012: A new paper was accepted by Technological Forecasting & Social Change.

Sept 2011: The European Commission published the study I was involved in on the interplay between standards and patents. To download, click here.

Sept 2011: A few more weeks to go before the start of the 7th International Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology (SIIT2011). For that conference, I will act as the programme chair.

June 2011: A new paper was accepted by Technovation.

May 2011: Working on the Open Essential IPR Disclosure Database. This public database includes cleaned data of all IPR disclosures of the 14 largest standards bodies worldwide. This work is done with Christian Catalini, Arianna Martinelli and Tim Simcoe and was first presented at the Standards, Patents & Innovation Pre-Conference by NBER in May 2011.

May 2011: a new paper co-authored by René Bongard and Alessandro Nuvolari was accepted by Research Policy.
